When Kevin*, just 5 years old, arrived at the home he was highly traumatised and he was having serious difficulty in school. Both his parents suffered from drug addiction. However Kevin's Dad often visited his son and the care team noticed that there was a strong bond between them. We supported him as he went through a detoxification programme and he was thought to look after Kevin; learning how to bath him, read him stories, how to discipline him and to start his day on a positive note. Kevin's behaviour improved and he began to enjoy school. After nine months his father found a new flat and the Home supported his effort to regain custody of his child. They are now living together and all is going well. This is just one example of how an investment of time and energy has provided a new opportunity for a deserving child and his father. When you support the Children’s Cottage Home financially you are investing in success stories like Kevin's. *Kevin's name and some details have been changed to respect the family's confidentiality.

About the Children’s Cottage Home Childhood should be a carefree time - playing and learning; feeling safe, loved and cared for in a stable family home. Sadly this is not the experience that many children have in our community today. Poverty, and abuse of drugs and alcohol leads to violence and neglect of some children; the innocent victims of others misfortune. The Children’s Cottage Home is dedicated to giving these children a safe and caring environment in which they can rediscover the good things about being a child. Because Kids deserve to be Kids. Because family is very important to a young child, the Children’s Cottage Home works with the whole family wherever possible. The service includes Emergency and short-term residential care Therapeutic care Parent support, training and education Programmes designed specifically to meet individual needs. While every effort is made to bring about a situation whereby the child can return safely to his/her natural family sometimes this is simply not possible. Where this is the case the Home helps to place the child with the most appropriate foster carers.
