OYSTER FESTIVAL


Glasthule - 18th - 20th September 1998


This year's Prawn & Oyster Festival promises to be a cracker, with live jazz & top Irish acts footing the bill.

Glasthule Village will be in a very festive mood this year. Flags & bunting along with window displays and street performers will be the order of the day. Live music in The Eagle House Marquee, and plenty of seafood for all who come. There will be spot prizes for the most unusual dressed person and for the window displays in local shops. The village will be decorated with tables and chairs so everyone can enjoy the edible delights on offer.

Friday 18th September:
The Oyster Queen arrives at the East Pier on board the Oyster Launch at 4pm and will be transported to the official opening by horse drawn carriage in a parade of vintage cars. In The Eagle House there will be a marquee with prawns and oysters for all. There will be a bar and live Jazz music. BIM will sponsor the Oyster Challenge Cup competition to find the festivals fastest oyster opener. Friday night there will be live music in The Eagle House with Paul Ashford and his band Stepaside, one of Ireland's top live acts. Bars are open 'till late and there will be plenty of 'Cráic' to be had. There will be live Jazz and a Guinness & Oyster promotion in Fitzgerald's of Sandycove.

Saturday 19th September:
Meet in the Eagle House marquee at lunchtime for Irish Coffee and a seafood lunch before we head off on guided walking & cycling tours of the area. Visit the James Joyce Tower and enjoy festive Jazz in Glasthule all day. Caviston's will hold and oyster opening display and the will be an exhibition of Irish Dancing and live music in Fitzgerald's. Mitchell's will be serving champagne and oysters, and there will be a jazz quartet in Ray Kavanagh's. The Gala Oyster Ball will take place in Fitzpatricks Castle Hotel beginning at 8pm. This promises to be a great event with a host of stars including Noel V Ginity, Louis Brown, Live Jazz Bands, Raffle, Super and MC Ronan Collins. Tickets available from Ann Joyce @ 284 1864.

Sunday 20th September:
Follow the vintage cars to the Eagle House for a day filled with live music, song, and fun for all the family in the marquee.
