Temporary Traffic Relief at Murphystown / Leopardstown Rd Junction

Relief will soon be underway for a nightmare junction. This one time quiet country road is totally unequipped for the volume of traffic now using it. High hedges and bends in the road mean that motorists coming from the Murphystown Rd junction on to the Leopardstown Rd can see little of the traffic in either direction,..

Almost faded road marking, lack of signage and hedges mean that motorists from the Leopardstown Rd direction can hardly find the Murphystown Rd Junction until they are almost past it - or until a motorist coming blindly from the Murphystown direction has almost crashed into them.

The current traffic problems have been caused by the huge increase in the number of houses built along Murphystown Rd in the last 6 years- Leopardstown Hts has 330 houses with another 630 on The Gallops and 270 in Leopardstown Valley.

'The installation of a temporary traffic management measure at the junction of the Murphystown Rd and Leopardstown Rd is currently being considered by the County Manger in advance of the main South Eastern Motorway works,' said Councillor Maria Corrigan.

'I have made repeated calls for temporary traffic management, such as traffic lights or a roundabout, to be installed at this junction, which is extremely dangerous both for pedestrians and motorists alike. I raised this issue with the County Manager at a recent meeting of the Dundrum Area Committee and have been informed that they are considering installing temporary traffic lights at the junction,' said Councillor Corrigan.

'Many residents in the area, especially those from Leopardstown Heights can't even access the junction during the morning as the traffic is so heavy. I therefore welcome the commitment on traffic lights from the County Manager and would also urge for a temporary roundabout to be installed which would help to alleviate traffic congestion,' concluded the Fianna Fáil councillor.

Dun Laoghaire Marina Set To Open In March

The Dun Laoghaire Marina project is nearing completition and will be ready to open during March in good time for the Spring and Summer seasons. This public facility will eventually accommodate 670 boats and will be the largest development of its kind in the county and amongst Europe's biggest marinas.

The berthing pontoons have already arrived by ship and took two days to unload and assemble at the East Pier. All have now been moved to the site and can be seen from Harbour Road. The pile driving work has reached the halfway stage and when complete, the pontoons will be moved in to position.

The two protective breakwaters are both on schedule for completition while the marina building is under construction. The new piers in the harbour will provide new routes for walkers towards the centre of the Harbour.

Interest from boat owners has been strong with the first phase of berths almost full. Significantly, only 20% of applications have been received from local Yacht Club members confirming demand for access to the sea from the wider public in the Dublin area.
Staff appointments will be filled over the next few weeks. In addition demand for other services such as sail makers, marine mechanics, chandlers etc. is expected to grow.

Brennan Announces £4.5 Million Swimming Pool

Local TD and Minister of State to the Taoiseach, Seamus Brennan, has announced that approval has been given for the advancement of a £4.5 million refurbishment of Glenalbyn swimming pool in Stillorgan.

'The Government will be providing up to £3 million towards this project,' said Mr Brennan, 'It will provide for the essential upgrading of the present pool, along with a new training pool, gym, aerobics room, sauna and plunge pool.' Speaking at a local meeting in Stillorgan, Mr Brennan noted that the existing pool is 25 yrs old and has been extensively used by individuals, groups and schools across a wide area of South Dublin.

He said that while greatly enhancing the facilities available to the public, the Government funding is recognition of the health and fitness value attached to regular swimming and exercise. The County Council will now advertise for consultants over the next few weeks, apply for planning permission and seek tenders for work to start in the Summer.
