O’Malley Condemns Alleged Sinn Fein Support For Garda Murderers
Published 19/03/2002Fiona O'Malley said, "I am outraged that an elected member of Dail Eireann should advocate sheltering murderers of Gardai. During an interview with Vincent Brown, Deputy Caoimhghin O’Caolain of Sinn Fein refused to urge members of the public to come forward if they possess information about the murder of Gardai by republicans or about illegal IRA arms dumps.
I find it totally unacceptable that a member of Dail Eireann would make such a statement. It is an affront to all those members of the Gardai who have protected our democracy on a daily basis since the foundation of the State. For a member of Dail Eireann to lend support to those who wish to subvert the institutions of this State, with a trilogy of murder, knee-cappings and punishment beatings is nothing short of treacherous.
Sinn Fein has publicly shown they have no allegiance to this Republic. For Deputy O’Caolain to acknowledge that he understands the need for the storage, importation and transportation of arms in this country, is in my mind subversive by nature and by deed.
The very core values of this Democracy are threatened by such behaviour and such comments. If unchallenged they allow those who advocate anarchy in this State, free reign to continue to undermine the basic rule of law and order that any true democracy is based on.
Those who ponder voting for Sinn Fein should reflect on Deputy O’Caolain’s remarks. I am calling on all Political Parties to support me in my call for Deputy O’Caolain resignation from Dail Eireann."
