Tanaiste Responds To Latest CSO Figures
Published 19/03/2002

Reacting to the latest figures released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) Mary Harney, Tanaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment said that the increase in unemployment was not unexpected. She pointed out that the unemployment rate remains low at 4% and is still among the lowest in the EU with long-term unemployment at 1.2%.

The Tanaiste acknowledged that the unemployment figures, may not yet reflect the full impact of redundancies announced in recent times, but she was confident that the Governments policies would keep unemployment to the minimum pending the anticipated upturn in world economic conditions.

The Tanaiste said "the policies of sound economic management and ensuring we remain a competitive location for business, will continue to generate value-added jobs and spin-off opportunities in Ireland. Our low personal income will ensure that Irish people will want to take up those opportunities. In the short-term we will continue to help those facing redundancy by engaging directly with them to find alternative employment or training, thus ensuring that any period of unemployment will be as short as possible".

The Tanaiste said, "A total of 42,000 new jobs were created last year. While this is a drop on the increases in the boom years in 1999 and 2000, it was still a good performance in difficult economic circumstances
