Rathmichael School Flys The Green Flag
Published 19/03/2002

Congratulations are due to Rathmichael Parish NS. who had their Green Flag renewed at an awards ceremony in Dublin recently. The ceremony was attended by artist Don Conroy who also launched An Taisce's new video 'Green Schools in Ireland', which is to be distributed to every school in the State.

Green Schools is a European environmental education programme and award scheme that promotes and acknowledges long-term, whole-school action for the environment. There are 950 Irish schools currently participating in the programme.

Schools such as Rathmichael NS. have made tremendous efforts to reduce their waste and eliminate litter in their school in order to attain their Green Flag. Rathmichael Parish NS. has several ongoing environmental initiatives in their school including composting, can recycling, 'ringo' recycling, litter management, a wild flower garden and a garden pond. Each class is responsible for managing a certain area of the school. They weigh their waste to monitor their progress and the children keep a diary of their efforts. The best thing about Green Schools is that the children have a lot of fun, while at the same time making a difference to their local environment.

Research has shown a 34 per cent diversion of waste from landfill by schools that adopt the programme. It has also shown that their students are less likely to drop litter, while being more likely to take part in environmental projects, conserve energy and water.

Green Schools is supported locally by the Local Authorities. Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council provides free compost bins, litter pickers, bags and gloves to the schools. The Environmental Education Officer is available to give talks on litter management, reducing waste, recycling and composting.
