Are You Registered To Vote?
Published 19/03/2002

Barry Andrews has called on more young people to get involved in politics saying, "The last General Election was five years ago, which means that no one under the age of 23 has ever voted in a General Election. Furthermore, it is estimated that up to 50% of 18 -30 year olds did not vote in that election. The election before that was in 1992 which would tend to suggest that roughly 75% of 18-30 year olds have never voted in a general election."

Councillor Barry Andrews, himself a young candidate in the election, says that young people have accordingly had little impact on the shape of the current Dail.

Councillor Andrews stated, "It is not surprising that so many young people are disinterested in politics as there is very little way for them to get involved. There is little way for them to influence the way decisions are made. They can feel that they do not have a stake in society. By making sure they are registered for the next election and making the effort to vote, Dail Eireann could be a very much younger forum than has been the case. The choice is theirs for the taking."

Councillor Andrews was speaking at the end of Ogra Fianna Fail's recruitment drive in Dun Laoghaire. For those who are not yet registered there is still time to register before the general election. Just contact Dun Laoghaire Council at 2054700 for a form, or call in for one.
