Poetry Now Festival 2002 Dun Laoghaire
Published 19/03/2002

The annual Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown Poetry Now Festival will take place on the weekend of March 21st-24th, with the majority of events this year being held in the Pavilion Theatre. Now in its seventh year, Poetry Now is the only remaining festival devoted solely to poetry. In recent years it has gained a considerable reputation for bringing together for one weekend some of the very best Irish and international poets writing today.

Among the readers at this year's Poetry Now will be Ireland's Seamus Heaney, Nobel Laureate and probably the best living poet in the English language. Mostly recently Heaney has published a new collection of poems called Electric Light and Finders Keepers, a selection of his journalism and critical writing over the past thirty years. Other Irish poets reading will include Brendan Kennelly, Peter Fallon, Eilean Ni Chuilleanain and Sinead Morrissey. The festival will also feature the immensely popular English poet Tony Harrison, whose most famous TV poem V was watched by three million viewers on Channel 4 and debated in the House of Commons, and the much-admired Kathleen Jamie from Scotland. This year will have a strong American flavour, including Jorie Graham and August Kleinzahler, two of America's most praised and influential contemporary poets, and a Keynote Address WB Yeats by Helen Vendler, probably the most famous living critic of English poetry. There will also be special events for children...

On Sunday morning there will be our traditional "Young Guns" showcase of three of the very best new poets to have emerged in Ireland in recent years. Among this year's Young Guns are Sinead Morrissey, John Mc Auliffe and Enda Wyley. That reading will also include the presentation of the annual Rupert and Eithne Strong Award for an emerging Irish poet.

The festival will also feature master classes to be given by Kleinzahler and Jamie, for previously published Irish poets. These will take place on the Saturday 23rd and will be subject to a small fee and selection process. Anyone interested, or just looking for programme details, should contact the arts office in Dun Laoghaire at 2054719 or arts@dlrcoco.ie.
