Dublin Independent Candidate Calls For Taoiseach To Veto
Published 19/03/2002Dun Laoghaire is living up to it's reputation as Irelands' most liberal constituency with the number of left wing candidates who are being fielded in the general election. As well as the Labour Party candidates, two independent candidates have come forward in recent weeks from the 'far left.' One of these is Mr DS O'Buchalla.
Independent candidate for the Dublin South East constituency Mr. D.S. O'Buchalla has called on the Taoiseach to have the proposed European Maritime Safety Agency to be located in Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin.
In a letter to An Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern he states that, "Ireland should seek the location of the agency in Ireland at the European Council meeting this week in Barcelona. If Ireland fails in this bid then Mr Ahern should Veto any agreement on the distribution of the other 13 agencies across the European Union." Carlisle Pier in Dun Laoghaire which is seeking proposals for its development would be an ideal location for the new agency contends Mr O'Buchalla contends, adding such a move would help create jobs in the local economy.
He said, "The recent establishment of the Marine Safety Directorate will further enhance Ireland's application for the European Maritime Safety Agency. There is sufficient Office space coming on-line in the Dun Laoghaire Harbour area to accommodate this Irish Safety Directorate and the decentralisation of the Department of the Marine. The location of all these Irish and European Offices would surely make Dun Laoghaire the marine capital of Ireland.
Dun Laoghaire needs this type of development to prosper, there is a very limited amount of space for industrial expansion in the town area. The only realistic possibility for Dun Laoghaire to develop is in the provision of administrative and government services".
With 300 EU officials currently working in Ireland he believes there is a need for at least 200 more to make staff support services more viable and once developed Mr. O' Buchalla, an European Affairs expert who was invited to Address the National Forum on Europe in Dublin Castle on February 11th, states that this new agency would have national and local ramifications. The ideal agency for Ireland would have been the European Food Safety Authority which looks set to go to Helsinki,
Finland. Its location in Ireland would have complemented the work of the European Food and Veterinary Office presently located in Dublin
City. He said," It is widely recognised that the bungling decision taken by the former Taoiseach, Deputy John Bruton, to locate this Office, the third Seat of the European Commission, to an isolated farm in his constituency in County Meath, has dented our credibility and our commitment to food safety throughout Europe. However, Deputy Bruton's gravest error of political judgement in his career should not deter you from seeking another agency for Ireland," he advised the Taoiseach.
